(Though judging by spoilers for next week, it may take some time to fully wake!) EJ and Gwen dumped big money into developing a drug to reverse death, and their work is finally paying off.

Or is it? If we stop and think about it, we realize that there’s just no way this drug can truly work; at least, not for good. Maybe it brought Lexie back, but in the end, it has to fail. Because if Gwen, EJ and Rolf are successful and they do create a drug that a) makes them boatloads of money and b) can reverse death, then Days of Our Lives is done.

The show has always played fast and loose with death, perhaps even more so than other soaps. They even had a character whose whole MO was death and rebirth: Stefano DiMera, The Phoenix! But the returns are never guaranteed.

But if this is a success, there’s no more death at all — barring (not to be too graphic) the bodies being completely destroyed. Worse, this drug has also presumably reversed Lexie’s fatal tumors, which would turn it into a magical cure-all on top of its ability to resurrect.

Cancer? Fixed. Rare disease? Fixed. Stabbed to death? Fixed. Strangled? Fixed. There wouldn’t even be a moment of tension in any of these things.

And that means that there is absolutely no way this story can end in anything other than tragedy. Lexie’s family and loved ones will welcome her back and adjust to her return, only to learn that she is dying once again. And there’s nothing they can do but watch it happen all over again.
