The cast of “Chicago Fire” were heartbroken as they bid farewell to Dermot Mulroney at his final resting place

Leading into the Chicago Fire season 14 season finale, anticipation reached a fever pitch after the penultimate episode wrapped up Severide’s long Internal Affairs investigation storyline and paved the way for him to move forward. We were left with questions about what he might choose to do next in his career at Firehouse 51 or possibly taking on a new role somewhere else.

Before the finale, we were also on the edge of our seats about whether Vasquez could be looking to pursue a different line of work, what happens with Mouch’s book about him and Herrmann, and whether there will be a shocking death. But there’s also the Severide and Kidd welcoming a “surprise visitor” and a very special vow renewal going down in the season 14 finale.

Chicago Fire season 14 episode 21 begins with a flash forward to three days into the future as the teams faces a dangerous call. Rewinding the clock, Herrmann’s stress mounts, and Cindy helps bring him back to reality. He drops to one knee and proposes to renew their vows. After everything they have been through 32 years in, she agrees to celebrate their marriage.

Fifty-eight hours before the call that has the team running to safety before a roof collapses, Kidd and Stellaride lie in bed and ponder the decision Severide will make about his future. When he asks what she thinks, she says that it’s about what he wants and she will support his choice. He has three days to decide whether he will stay at Firehouse 51 or take the job at arson investigation.

Herrmann and Cindy plan a vow renewal at Molly’s

Violet, Novak, and Vasquez walk into work having a playful conversation, but they’re interrupted when Vasquez’s dad drives up for a surprise drop-in. He’s disappointed the Vasquez canceled his meeting with PD’s training commander. He pushes Vasquez to reschedule the meeting as a favor since Mottola helped him out. Vasquez agrees to take the meeting.

While Severide gets called into an unexpected meeting, Cruz expresses his concerns about having another baby and Herrmann announces that he and Cindy are renewing their vows at Molly’s before breaking ground on rebuilding their house. Suddenly, we’re up to 36 hours before the call, and Severide meets with Chief Pascal, who he’s surprised to see. Pascal urges him to turn down the OFI job and informs him that his promotion to captain went through.

Violet and Novak help Cindy plan the vow renewal party at Molly’s, and Cindy wants the them of the party to be “gratitude.” That’s very broad, but Violet pitches a gratitude wall for guest to share their personal photos. Mouch receives a call from the publisher he sent his book proposal to and wants to talk about Brother in Arms in person. However, they want the version without Herrmann.

Severide and Kidd still go back and forth on his decision and find Isaiah touring one of the engines with Vasquez. Lydia dropped him off and will be staying with a friend, so Isaiah will be staying back hom with Severide and Kidd. When Cruz gets home, he finds Chloe in pain and worrying about the baby. We’re now 18 hours away from the call as Cruz and Chloe learn that the bleeding she’s experiencing is actually due to twins. It’s a surprise announcement, but the babies are healthy.
