Very Shocking Update: Coronation Street fans have the most brutal response to the upcoming death storyline
So, first, I wrote a fun piece about the amount of bad guys traipsing the cobbles of Coronation Street, and who could potentially bring them down.
I popped a fun little poll in there, to try and gauge which of the fearsome five you’d like to see pay the ultimate price when the Grim Reaper next pays a visit to Weatherfield.
While monstrous abuser, Theo Silverton (James Cartwright), won (or maybe lost?) in an utter landslide that saw him up against the sinister sister, Jodie Ramsey (Olivia Frances-Brown),
the sleaze machine himself, Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard), the acid-tongued husband killer Maggie Driscoll (Pauline McLynn) and the paedophile groomer, Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon).
So that’s the end of the story, right? We’ve established that fans are ready to see Theo’s abuse of Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) come to a very permanent end.
Well, actually, no. Because it seems like one corpse is not enough for you people!
I’m certain that I don’t just speak for myself when I say this: I absolutely love to see the readers interact and share their thoughts on Metro social media pages.
It’s reminiscent of when and how I originally fell in love with soap in the first place. Going into school, discussing and dissecting what had happened the night before. Who shot Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden)? Who would Richard Hillman (Brian Capron) target next? Would Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) go down for the death of Chris Tate (Peter Armory)?
Soap opens discussion like no other television genre can. I mean, it’s pretty universally accepted that everybody hated the final Game of Thrones season, and Ross and Rachel belonged together. Alexis Rose had the best character arc in Schitt’s Creek and Adolescence was a sobering look at the dark, dangerous online reality that the youth of today can’t escape from.
But soaps, with their long-time, enduring characters that we as viewers get to truly know and spend so much time with, I’d argue create stories and moments that have the potential to penetrate deeper than any other medium.
I argued in my last piece that perhaps Theo had come out on top of the poll because of the raw, uncomfortable and visceral scenes of him abusing Todd in a myriad of ways, though, according to further comments left on that post, it seems that the general distaste of Theo is more due to the abuse storyline playing in conjunction with so many dark stories, leaving little room for the comedic, lighter plots that Corrie fans so desperately crave.
Nicola Jayne Dickinson posited: ‘When is it going to become nice and cheerful and funny again?’, while Jean de Tourtoulon added: ‘Ruining the cobbles it’s been appalling for years, we loved the funny one liners, now we just get ridiculous dragged out storylines which make no real sense,’
Janna Dawson is also in agreement that the Street has become much too grim: ‘Too many dark souks…let’s lighten the street please’, with Lorraine Rowley echoing her sentiment: ‘They all need gone, the story lines are too dark…get Debbie out of prison, lets have some laughter back, she is a ray of sunshine’.
So what was the Metro reader response to my last piece, in which I told you all that Theo was the most unpopular of the baddies? Responding to the headline: ‘Coronation Street fans have decided who should die in upcoming murder twist’, you guys certainly let me know that you’d decided and were standing ten toes down on that decision.
‘Everyone of them’, said Jackie Townsley, in what became a much-echoed sentiment throughout the comment section.
‘I do hope it’s all the characters in the pic, it would nice to see something positive on the streets for a change,’ said Sharon Peart.
For reference, I’ve attached the picture below.
Judy Chaffin said: ‘I thought I was the only one who’d think ‘all five”.
Apparently not, Judy!
Maureen Gibson floated an idea: ‘All of them. Let Corrie have the first ever massacre,’ while Vicki Black added: ‘The whole bloody lot!’
The hunger for light hearted, comedic plots is clearly still there. Valerie Gilstin posted: ‘All of them, and get some decent characters in who knowabout comedy’ while Shereene Deakin backed her point: ‘Says a lot…5 real baddies. How about adding some good guys and some humour and good news?’
It’s clearer than ever that Corrie fans want less villainy and more light hearted humour, right?
I, as always, look forward to reading the comments.
