Big Trouble!! Coronation Street terror for Debbie as she meets serious enemy in prison
Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) is behind bars in Coronation Street, and the last thing she needs is to land herself in any bother with another inmate. Unfortunately,
that’s exactly what she’s going to get. The beloved character has become a prisoner as a result of pleading guilty to a crash that led to Billy Mayhew’s (Daniel Brocklebank) death.
At the start of January, Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) drove erratically out of Debbie’s wedding venue, with his sister (unaware at the time that she’s actually his mum) in the passenger side.
Debbie Webster meets a woman called Paula
Carl crashed his car, which impacted how Corriedale unfolded. He then got out of the seat and placed Debbie behind the wheel instead. Due to the fact the character has dementia, she struggled to recall whether she actually was driving.
Debbie eventually pleaded guilty and was sent to prison. As she’s tried to adjust to the dark world, she’s come across Lou Michaelis (Farrel Hegarty), a former Weatherfield resident who’s currently doing time for attacking Gary Windass (Mikey North).
In upcoming episodes, Debbie is forced to explain her situation to Lou when she accidentally calls her Abi. After she chats to Lou about her onset dementia, it becomes clear that another inmate called Paula recognises Debbie.
Lou tells her that Paula, who is played by Emmerdale’s Kelli Hollis, is bad news and it’s best to avoid her altogether. Just as Lou heads off, Paula marks Debbie’s card and reminds her that she once got barred from the hotel.
In the week, Debbie’s minding her own business when Paula suddenly barges her way into her cell. Alarmed, Debbie is taken aback as Paula bursts into tears and explains that her boyfriend has dumped her, and that he’s doing time for aggravated burglary.
Debbie tries to comfort her, but is she taking a risk?
Should she leave Paula well alone as Lou advised?
‘I think she was willing to take the blame because she feels so guilty’, star Sue Devaney recently said as she discussed why Debbie has gone to prison for Carl’s crime.
‘She feels so guilty because Carl has been through such a hard time. She didn’t know that he had such a hard time growing up with Elaine. So when she finds out the guilt is dreadful. I think it’s in her head, she thinks that Carl is like he is because of her.
‘She’s made him a bad person, because she didn’t bring him up, because she wasn’t his mother. So all that guilt, shame, remorse that she feels, it’s like, well, I’m gonna take all this, because it’s my fault. It’s my fault that he’s behaving like that.’
