Very Shocking Update: Coronation Street star reveals secret layer to dramatic Corriedale scene
Coronation Street star Sue Devaney, who plays beloved character Debbie Webster, has revealed a secret layer to her dramatic Corriedale scene.
Last month, the soap confirmed one of its biggest fan theories after revealing that Debbie is actually the biological mother of Carl. While only viewers are aware of her secret
at the moment, next week’s scenes will see Debbie finally reveal the truth that Carl is her son rather than her brother, which he had presumed for his entire existence.
Speaking about the developments, Devaney shared that Debbie had intended to tell Carl the truth when she got into the car with him at the beginning of the Corriedale crossover, though she was unable to find the right moment.
“I think she’s always been waiting for the right moment,” said the actor. “Because she’s been diagnosed with dementia, she wants to tell the truth before she forgets it. At that moment, when she was in the car, there was a feeling that she was about to tell him something.”
“[It was] almost to try and stop him doing what he was doing. I think she’s been wanting to tell him a few times, and she just doesn’t find the right time,” added the star, who is due to leave the ITV soap next year.
While Debbie will soon tell Carl the truth, she will naturally be faced with questions as to why she kept it hidden for so long, and Devaney reasoned that her character had many motives for not disclosing the full story.
“I think she compartmentalised it,” said the actor. “This happened such a long time ago, where she gave birth to him, and then watched him grow up, seeing his dad and Elaine bringing him up.
“In her head, she thought, ‘yeah, he is my brother.’ It’s the story that you tell yourself. She thought he was being brought up well. At the time, she was 16 or 17 – she couldn’t look after him.
